It was a calm afternoon in early spring when James first noticed something unusual. The house was quiet, and he had been working from home for most of the day. His wife Emma was running errands, and their son Liam had been playing upstairs.
Suddenly, a faint sound broke the silence.
At first, James couldn’t tell exactly what it was. The noise echoed softly through the hallway, almost like a distant whimper.
He paused and listened more closely.
It was Liam.
The boy was crying.
Concerned, James stood up and followed the sound upstairs. Liam rarely cried unless something truly upset him, so James moved quickly through the house.

A Rarely Used Space
The attic in their home was not a place the family visited often. Like many attics, it served mostly as storage for old holiday decorations, boxes of clothing, and a few forgotten household items.
The narrow staircase creaked slightly as James climbed toward the attic door.
When he opened it, sunlight streamed through a small window at the far end of the room.

Several had lost large portions of their branches, leaving gaps in the row.
Replacing them became a priority.
They scheduled a landscaping company to remove the damaged trees and plant new ones later in the spring.
Before the work began, James decided to inspect the area himself.

While walking along the tree line, James spotted something partially hidden near the ground.
It was small and dull in color, barely visible beneath the branches.
At first, he thought it might simply be a piece of old yard equipment.
He bent down and brushed away some dirt.
The object appeared to be made of metal.
Its surface looked weathered and slightly rusted.
